A hashtag is created on Twitter by adding the pound sign # in front of a word or phrase. Hashtags only work when there are no spaces or punctuation in the phrase.
#FollowFriday organizes all of the Follow Friday updates (a Twitter meme).
A hashtag can also be used by a group or a conference to organize all of the tweets from that conference. For example, #engage10 organizes all of the tweets about the Engage! conference for wedding professionals together and allows them to be easily followed or searched by others.
