What is a Meta Tag? - Social Media Glossary

Sunday, May 29, 2005

A meta tag is a keyword placed in the code in the header section of a website. Meta tags are not visible on the website but they are visible to search engines.

Meta tags were originally meant to tell a search engine what a website was about, but many search engines no longer give them primary weight or use them at all.
