How did you get started in wedding planning?
I have always loved throwing parties! I can remember back when I convinced my dad to build some custom benches for my fourth grade birthday party. I mean, if we're going to have a wiener roast, let's have a wiener roast! That was my best party ever! So, throughout pharmacy school, I became the go-to girl for party planning and weddings. I used to sit in class with my classmates and look through fashion and bridal glossies and design their invitations and gown and bridesmaid dresses. It got so bad that one of my professors started calling me "Glamour Girl" in class! To get extra spending money, I would plan wedding and parties for people that I didn't know. I did my first FULL wedding the last year of pharmacy school. And the bug never left me even though I was working full time in the pharmacy industry. I continued to do parties, luncheons and events for myself, my friends and my sorority. However, I knew I was not completely fulfilled in my chosen profession, so after talking it over with my honey, we signed up for classes on how to start and run a small business and then he motivated me to sign up for a wedding planning certification class. And the rest is history.
If you had to start over what one thing would you do differently?
I would have started sooner!
What's your favorite item in your emergency kit?
Scissors. There are never enough scissors when you need them.
What is the best piece of business advice you've ever received?
Mind your pennies. When starting out, I know the eye buys in this industry and you must present yourself with a very well thought out image. However, how can you best project this image without going out and buying expensive letterhead and printed envelopes, personalized bags, pens and pencils and letterpress business cards? You need how to bootstrap some of these items until you are making the income to support these expenses. You also need to reserve your money for where it matters most.
What two people (past or present) would you have as guests at a dinner party and why?
I'm not going to say anyone famous and I must use initials to protect the innocent (or the guilty!): KL and DW. I would want them as guests at my dinner party to find out what happened in the life of a person that means so much to me. Background info from another perspective would give me a better understanding as to what makes this person tick.
What are your three favorite blogs besides thesmartplanner.com?
This is hard, because I like so many!! Southern Weddings, Michelle Rago, and Seth's Blog.

Very inspiring story Katasha. You mentioned throwing a party for your sorority members, so what sorority are you a part of? I ask because I am a member of Delta Sigma Theta so of course I have to find out if you're my soror ;-)
Great post! I love hearing more about our industry colleagues. Keep them coming.
BTW: Katasha is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority!
Love & Soul Always, Kay
Great Write Up! I've only known Katasha for a short time, but I am truly impressed with her passion and commitment to the industry. I've been in the hospitality/planning industry for over 20 years (now working for a top caterer in the state of Indiana), and I have never met anyone quite like Katasha. Msy her future endeavors be blessed!
