Some people like to wax philosophical about how there is no competition. It's a feel-good saying, but it's also incorrect. There IS competition and there always will be. A wiser choice would be to choose to ignore them, not to pretend that they don't exist at all.
You don't have to be better than your competition, you just have to be the best at what you do.

How timely this post was. I was just reading Holly Becker's response on Formspring to someone who asked her if she ever felt overwhelmed by the competition--she said "No, because I'm not in one". I thought of this as a great way stay focused and maintain a positive attitude. Your post is a look at the other side of that coin--I think it's important to find a balance between staying at the forefront of your industry (whatever it may be) and maintaining a creative spirit.
