The Must-Have Goal

It's the beginning of the new year and everyone is making lists of goals, intentions, aspirations and all the things they'd like to accomplish in 2011. Whatever your goals for this coming year, I'd encourage you to add reading to that list. It seems like a no-brainer, but it's the one thing that is sure to give you a competitive advantage and it's also the one thing that is first tossed to the bottom of the to-do pile.

Whether it's a non-fiction business book where you learn more about a specific skillset or concept, or a well-written fiction book that sparks your creativity, reading gives you a competitive advantage because it changes the way you think about and view the world.

I once heard an entrepreneur say that she wanted to read three business books over a span of three years. Her competitors have nothing to worry about. Do yours?

Now that I have a Kindle I think I will be able to read so much more. I'm already almost finished with UnMarketing, the majority has been read since Christmas. I have at least 8 other books already on the Kindle, ready to start.

Agreed! There is an inherent difference between reading versus listening and viewing. When listening and viewing, the content moves on whether you've fully understood it or not. With reading, the content stops you if you haven't understood it and it forces you to re-read and reflect until it can be understood enough to move on. Yeah, reading is pretty cool.

Funny you should post this. Since I work from home, on 12/31 I jumped in the car and headed to my local library. With my new card, I can download books to my iPad, while I am on the road and I can order books online. When they arrive, I receive an email.

The short trip to the library for pick-up also invigorates my creativity--the librarians do incredible displays and I often grab book I would never have even looked at before.

Best of all, the smell. I love the smell of the stacks.

Such a good reminder. I actually added reading to my list. My goal is one per month. I also limited my goals this year to 3 per area (personal, business, financial, etc) so I can actually attain them. I have a back up list too in case I get through them all;) Have a happy new year!

I was just headed over here to find a list of your recommended business books! Looks like I'm on the right page so far then... (lame pun intended) Would love for you to do a refresher post on business books you enjoyed, please!
Happy New Year!

My big business goal for the year is learning how to identify and kill projects that aren't working. It's easy to launch a project ... much harder to figure out when it's not succeeding, and how to gracefully fold it.

I'm so excited we formed a book club this year! I knew it would be good for us! Thanks!
