People don't know what they don't know. Your clients aren't experts at what you do. If they were, they wouldn't be hiring you.
Companies create a disconnect when the first thing they ask is "so what do you want?" Your role as an artist is not to be a short-order cook, but to dream with and for your client, to come up with ideas that they can not because they lack your expertise.
"What do you want?" is a good question, but it shouldn't be the leading question. Showing me what I want is a better way to create raving fans.
