How did you get started in the wedding industry?
I began my career in 1981 working in Catering for fine luxury hotels in Chicago. I left hotels to find the balance I needed to raise my family. I decided to focus on the part of the hotel industry that I loved the most, weddings. By starting my company I could bring both my inside catering knowledge and passion for weddings to my clients.

How has the industry changed since you started?
The industry is very saturated with wedding planners; there were only a small percentage when I began my career.

What was the biggest lesson you learned early on in your business?
It’s all about the details, timing and excellence, without that, you are just another planner. A successful wedding coordinator anticipates both the guests and the family’s needs and exceeds all expectations.

What is the biggest lesson you've learned in the past few years?
I’ve learned to trust my gut more; if a piece of business doesn’t feel right, it’s better to turn it down then to work through it. Not every client is a good match and if you sense you are not going to have a successful partnership with them, you probably aren’t.

What one piece of advice would you give to another entrepreneur on sticking it out in a competitive industry?
You have to really love what you do because you will eat, sleep and breathe this business. If you don’t have a true passion for it, your clients and vendors will feel that and you won’t succeed.
