Splendid Sundays Volume 157Sunday, May 25, 2014
A handful of splendid finds from around the worldwide web:
*Time Inc. will start selling ads on magazine covers, breaking an industry taboo. "The Time and Sports Illustrated cover ads . . . come two weeks before Time Inc. begins trading on the New York Stock Exchange as a public company, spun off from Time Warner to fend for itself." [AdAge]
*The Case for Reparations. "In 1860, slaves represented about 16 percent of the total household assets—that is, all the wealth—in the entire country, which in today’s terms is a stunning $10 trillion . . . slaves as property were worth more than all the banks, factories and railroads in the country put together." [The Atlantic]
*Master's degrees are as common now as bachelor's degrees were in the 1960's. "In 1971, about 64 percent of master's recipients were getting either a degree in business or a degree that lined up with a specific job (engineer, nurse, librarian, policy wonk). By 2012, about 80 percent were — and business reigned supreme." [Vox]
*Three US states will permit a "Right To Try" law, allowing Dallas Buyers Club-style drugs for terminally ill patients. States include Colorado, Louisiana and Mississippi, with "Arizona voting in November on whether to adopt similar measures." [The Telegraph]
Notable from The Splendid Collective:
*The 2013 US Wedding Market Report and the 2013 US Southern Wedding Market Report are both now available from Splendid Insights. One insight of note: 6% of Southern weddings in 2013 had luxury budgets, up from 4% in 2012.
*I'll be speaking at engage!14 next week in Colorado. If you are attending engage! for the first time, check out the engage!11 Guide for Introverts and Getting the Most out of engage!13 posts from the Splendid archives. Most of the advice still holds true. If you're interested in the history of the event, here's a Q+A with engage! co-founder Rebecca Grinnals.
