Email

Part of the key to having communication serve us rather than us serving it, is knowing how to set boundaries around it. Today's Get Splendid tip is simple: turn off push notifications.

No audible pings, no red badges, no pop ups, no text message style alerts that there are new Instagram followers or comments, etc.

I did this years ago, and it immediately gave my life more margin – mentally, emotionally, and timewise. I turned the notifications off for everything, including email. Cutting the interruptions made me more focused and more productive, and allowed me to manage my time better which meant I was still able to communicate with people quickly.

Your email signature should fit in a tweet (140ish characters).

The idea that email signatures are a great place to market all of your new services or events was born before the smartphone. These days, when people are checking their email on a device that fits in their pocket, long email signatures overstuffed with info take up too much screen real estate and waste time.

Keep your signature short and sweet, hyperlink where necessary, and avoid any special design formatting – most phones just convert that to normal text now anyway, ensuring the recipient won't see your original color or font style.
